There’s nothing like the fresh, luminous look of freshly highlighted hair—whether you opt for a classic half head of foils, subtle face-framing pieces, or a bold full head transformation. At Baileys Hairdressing, we know how important it is to keep that salon-fresh look lasting as long as possible.

To help you protect your colour, maintain the condition of your hair, and stretch the time between visits, we’ve rounded up our top tips for caring for highlighted hair at home.

1. Use a Sulphate-Free, Colour-Safe Shampoo

Standard shampoos can strip colour and natural oils from your hair. A sulphate-free shampoo is much gentler and will help keep your highlights vibrant for longer. Look for shampoos specifically designed for coloured or highlighted hair.

2. Tone at Home with a Purple Shampoo (Once a Week)

If you notice any yellow or brassy tones creeping in, a purple shampoo can neutralise them and keep your highlights looking cool and clean. Use it once a week and follow the instructions carefully to avoid over-toning.

3. Deep Condition Weekly

Highlighting, especially with bleach, can leave hair feeling dry or fragile. A weekly deep conditioning treatment or mask will restore moisture, softness, and shine. Ask your Baileys stylist for product recommendations suited to your hair type.

4. Minimise Heat Styling

Excess heat from straighteners or curling tongs can fade colour and damage your hair’s condition. Try to limit heat styling, and always use a heat protectant when you do.

5. Avoid Over-Washing

Washing your hair too often can fade your colour and dry out your hair. Aim for 2-3 times a week and use dry shampoo in between if needed.

6. Protect Hair from the Sun and Chlorine

UV rays and pool chemicals can quickly alter the tone and health of highlighted hair. Wear a hat in the sun, use a UV-protection spray, and if you swim, rinse your hair with clean water first and wear a swim cap where possible.

7. Schedule Regular Maintenance Visits

Even the best at-home care routine won’t replace professional upkeep. Depending on your highlight placement and hair growth, we usually recommend a refresh every 6-10 weeks. Whether it’s a half head of highlights, T-section, or face-framing foils, we’ll help you keep things looking natural and fresh.
